Paulaner Bräuhaus, a Slice of Munich in Jakarta

Paulaner Bräuhaus, a Slice of Munich in Jakarta

Munich is home to the largest volksfest in the world—I think people can simply call it beer festival to avoid confusion, but the internet doesn’t agree with me—the Oktoberfest. Can you imagine a whole two weeks when a city truly beats for people and beer? In 2013, more than six million litres of this alcoholic beverage were consumed during the Oktoberfest! For a slice of Munich and the Oktoberfest in Jakarta, there’s no better place than Paulaner Bräuhaus at Grand Indonesia. Paulaner is one of the six major beer producers in Munich.

Besides beer, the Bavarians are also known for their hearty appetite, thus it’s no surprise that Paulaner Bräuhaus’ dishes are, well, humongous. Take the Paulaner Platter as an example. The platter gives you smoked pork chop, five pieces of three different types of oh-so-juicy sausages, crispy pork knuckle, sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes. Yes, it’s most likely too much for one person to handle. Too oily. Too fatty. But that’s what classic German food is all about. Go big or go home.

Q: Would you go to Paulaner Bräuhaus without a taste of their famous beer, freshly brewed at its own microbrewery?
A: No, certainly no.

Whether you prefer the slightly hoppy Lager beer, the deliciously dark bittersweet Dunkel beer, or the fun Weißbier, there must be something in Paulaner’s beer list that will catch your fancy. Alcohol lightweights and beer first-timers might be interested in trying the mixed beer drinks: Radler, Mango, Strawberry, Lychee, or the root beer flavoured Black Bart. My personal favourites? Lager beer for a girl’s night out; Radler for family dinner; and Mango whenever the fruity beer fever strikes.

While there aren’t many dessert choices for the sweet tooth—and the ones on that part of the menu are not the prettiest dish in the world—give the Apfelkuecherl a shot. Served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, these not-so-little deep fried apple fritters are an interesting mix of sugary and cinnamon-y crispy skin and acidic apples. Like apple pie, but fried. And crunchy.

If you’re feeling slightly apprehensive about eating at Paulaner because of all the fat and calories that you’re counting in your head, always remember that the tangy sauerkraut has health benefits. Furthermore, believe it or not, so does beer. Prost!
